Destinations
Explore rainforest regions, reserves and remarkable natural places across Australia — from the Wet Tropics of Queensland to cool temperate forests in Tasmania.
Australia's rainforest isn't one thing spread across the country. It is several distinct systems that happen to share a canopy and not much else. The Wet Tropics of Far North Queensland run hot and wet most of the year, holding some of the oldest continuously surviving rainforest on Earth. Further south, the Gondwana Rainforests straddle the Queensland and New South Wales border, a patchwork of reserves tracing back to the ancient supercontinent they're named for. Tasmania's cool temperate rainforest is a different climate again, quieter and mossier, shaped by rain that falls in a completely different pattern through the year.
Each region page below covers the reserves, access points and driving distances that actually matter when deciding where to go. Some regions suit a half day stop between other plans. Others need a proper trip in their own right. The pages link through to specific walks, wildlife and parks, so you're choosing with some context rather than picking a name off a map.
