The Gondwana rainforests preserve a remarkable range of subtropical, warm temperate and cool temperate forest across eastern Australia, shaped by elevation, escarpments, rainfall and long ecological continuity.
The Gondwana Rainforests of Australia are spread across a series of protected landscapes in eastern Australia rather than forming one continuous rainforest. Their significance lies partly in this diversity: subtropical forest, warm temperate rainforest and cool temperate rainforest occur across different elevations and climatic conditions.
Walking through these forests can feel very different from tropical rainforest in far northern Queensland. The canopy may be lower, the atmosphere cooler and the landscape more strongly shaped by mountain ridges, escarpments and deep valleys.
Water remains central. Creeks cut through shaded gullies, waterfalls drop from elevated plateaus and persistent moisture creates pockets of rainforest in terrain that can change dramatically within a relatively short distance.
The result is a landscape where forest type, geology and elevation are closely connected. Understanding that relationship makes the experience more interesting than simply treating each park or lookout as an isolated attraction.
Elevation changes temperature, rainfall and exposure, which in turn changes the forest. Lower and warmer areas can support lush subtropical vegetation, while higher ground can transition into cooler temperate environments.
These transitions are part of what makes the Gondwana landscapes so distinctive. A walk can move from dense, humid forest into more open mountain vegetation without travelling a great horizontal distance.
The contrast between warmer, species-rich subtropical forest and cooler upland rainforest is one of the defining features of the broader Gondwana landscape.

Waterfalls are not separate from the rainforest story. They often mark the edges of elevated plateaus and escarpments, where creeks move from high ground into deeply cut valleys below.
The surrounding forest responds to that terrain. Moist gullies can remain sheltered and humid, while exposed ridges experience very different conditions only a short distance away.
Wildlife in these rainforests is closely tied to forest structure, moisture and elevation. Dense understorey, canopy, forest edges, rocky gullies and waterways all create different habitat conditions within the same broader landscape.
Dense vegetation also means wildlife is not always obvious. Sound, movement in leaf litter and activity above the track can be more useful than searching for distant views.
The value of walking in Gondwana rainforest is not simply reaching a viewpoint. Tracks make changes in elevation, vegetation and moisture easier to notice.
A route may begin on an exposed ridge, enter a shaded gully and pass beneath a much denser canopy within minutes. Water, slope and aspect continually alter the character of the forest.
Short walks can therefore be surprisingly informative. Distance matters less than the variety of environments a track passes through.
